The College of Teachers (“The College” or “College) is a self-governing body of experienced faculty members that collectively leads our school, originating from Rudolf Steiner’s vision of collaborative, non-hierarchical leadership. It’s typically composed of class teachers, subject teachers, and other key faculty with several years of experience who are dedicated to holding the spiritual and pedagogical health of the school through ongoing study and commitment.
The College serves several core purposes. In terms of pedagogical leadership, it ensures the curriculum aligns with the school’s three foundational pillars: Waldorf curriculum and child development, social justice, and outdoor education. For faculty development, it mentors new teachers and provides ongoing professional development opportunities. The College also preserves and evolves the school’s culture, mission, and values. Finally, it takes a collaborative approach to major pedagogical decisions, including school policies, personnel matters, and strategic planning.
This model matters because it empowers teachers by giving educators a direct voice in school governance, moving away from traditional top-down administrative structures. It also enables holistic decision-making, where choices consider the whole child and the entire school community, ensuring that pedagogical considerations remain central to how the school operates. This collaborative governance structure reflects the Waldorf philosophy’s emphasis on community, shared responsibility, and decisions that serve the developmental needs of students at every level.
This year’s College of Teachers includes ten amazing educators who represent every part of our school community, bringing diverse perspectives from all programs and grade levels. The elementary years are well-represented by Christy, who teaches 3rd grade and understands what children need during these important years. Our kindergarten program benefits from both Kaori’s classroom teaching and Lesley’s role as both teacher and program coordinator. Our youngest learners are supported by Shirene, who coordinates and teaches preschool, and Jess, who serves as both preschool teacher and pedagogical coordinator. The middle school perspective comes from Niku, an 8th grade teacher who brings valuable insight into preparing our oldest students for high school. Patti ensures complete care by running our after care program and providing quality support for students throughout the day. Mel helps fulfill our commitment to outdoor education by representing the farm, while also serving as a representative for subject teachers. Stephanie coordinates the grades program while teaching handwork and representing our subject teachers. Miel serves as administrative director, holding the whole of the school in view and bringing that complete perspective to the College of Teachers. Together, these dedicated teachers create a complete educational experience that spans from our youngest 3-year-olds to our graduating 8th graders.
We are looking forward to working together this year to serve our school and the dear children we have the privilege to teach. Through our collaboration and shared commitment, we aim to nurture each child’s growth and learning journey with care and dedication.
