For the 2016-2017 academic year, we have a 1st grade and a 2nd grade.
For the 2017-2018 academic year, we will have 1st - 3rd grade, and add a grade each year until we reach 8th grade.
We strive to bring Waldorf curriculum with an emphasis on outdoor education We are building a community of students and families in San Francisco. Our grades’ students spend about 60% of their school days outdoors either engaged in farming activities at the farm or in the expansive spaces of the city’s public parks - Glen Canyon, Fort Funston, McLaren Park and Golden Gate Park.
We aim to integrate the experience of being in nature in the city with the equally valuable experience of being in a classroom doing academic work such as reading, writing, and mathematics and artistic work such as singing, flute playing, drawing/painting, and handwork projects. Our curriculum is steeped in storytelling and we believe in the unfolding of the curriculum as laid out in Waldorf education.
We also strive to bring the community into the classroom and bring the classroom into the community - engaging in social service projects, learning about our place in the world, and experiencing the seasons and elements of San Francisco.
First grade spends its mornings indoors for the first few hours of the day learning language arts, mathematics, music, and painting in the Main Lesson. Movement exercises are brought throughout the day. Two afternoons a week are spent at the farm with the plants, compost, weeds, chickens and earth. One afternoon is spent hiking in Glen Canyon. The week ends with Fridays outdoors all day in one of the city’s parks, bringing the learning environment outdoors.
Second grade spends two days indoors, two full days at the farm, and one day in one of the city’s parks. Each day begins with music, movement and activities aimed to integrate the students’ bodies and minds. At the farm the students have a gazebo structure as a classroom so they are able to continue their bookwork while still listening to birds and feeling the elements. The teacher brings the curriculum of reading, writing or mathematics regardless of whether they are indoors or out.
Both grades are served by having weekly Spanish, Handwork, Eurythmy and additional art classes. We aim to introduce further specialty class.
